A large percentage of a modern fire-fighters role involves fire prevention achieved through public education and prevention. We call this part of the job, CFS or Community Fire Safety. We achieve these goals in a variety of ways, depending on the subject matter.
Fire fighters of Wantage and other fire stations, help the public with fire prevention in the following ways: -
Station visits
At a pre-arranged time, groups can come down to the Station for a tour of the building. These are mainly children from the Scouts, Brownies, Beavers, Schools etc. but adult groups are more than welcome to arrange a visit. Visitors will see and learn about the general running of the station itself and also the fire engine. Plenty of questions are welcomed and visitors should return home with a greater understanding of their local fire station and fire safety.
School visits
Education of children in fire safety is of great importance to the fire service. By giving children an understanding of the dangers involved in fire in a fun and interesting way, we can help ensure they’re safety in future years. Members of all the emergency services can seem frightening to children so by speaking to them in their schools, in an environment that they feel relaxed in, we help can dispel those fears.
If possible, a full crew will attend these visits in the fire engine. This offers the children the chance to look over the engine after the talk and to ask any additional questions. The fire crew would be operational during the visit however and could be called out at any time. On the rare occasion that this would happen, the children would see the engine leave the school with the blue lights flashing and the siren sounding!
Home visits
Smoke alarms, when correctly fitted, save lives. By request, a crew can visit a home to give advice on the quantity, type and position of smoke alarms. In the case of a lower income household, smoke alarms can be provided at no cost to the occupier.
Electric blanket testing
The fire service hold special days at stations or Community centres, for the free testing of electric blankets. Wantage also offers this service and occasionally holds this potentially life saving service to the public.
Events
Attending local events such as Fetes is also an important part of the Community service that we provide. The crews that attend these occasions do so in their own time but showing true community spirit, crew shortages are rare. The public have the opportunity to mix with the crew attending and ask any questions in a relaxed atmosphere. Children love to climb into the fire engine pretending to be a fire fighter, usually joined by Mum and Dad too! As with the school visits, the crew could still be called to an incident at any time and leaving an event with the siren sounding can add some excitement to the day.
